Wahlen VAMC B.1 Emergency Temporary Transformer Replacement

RDC+EA was selected to design a 750kva transformer to bypass the two transformers that were in critical condition feeding the main hospital (B.1) for the Salt Lake City VA campus. Based on test results, the transformers were in critical condition and could fail if not immediately addressed, causing possible damage to the entire VA hospital. Our team faced difficulties when routing the conduit through the existing structures, around existing equipment and into 60 year old equipment. The team successfully designed a specialty switchgear section to connect into and bypass the old switchgear.

Wahlen VAMC Prosthetics Expansion Second Floor Addition B.1 Prosthetics & Ortho/Neuro/ Holistic Medicine

We provided engineering for a new building with doctor’s offices, exam rooms, a therapy gym, consultation rooms, conference rooms, and general office space. The phasing was involved on the VA’s busy campus and the designing was associated with the electrical and lighting systems. The addition would be building upon existing space which required tight coordination between existing structures and systems. This construction would shut down a main entrance to the hospital and required a detailed phasing plan with egress and access to the building.

Wahlen VAMC Emergency Department Urgent Care Clinic Addition

We provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) and fire protection engineering and technology design (security) for this $9 million (construction budget) project involving 18,000 sq. ft. new construction and 13,000 sq. ft. of demolition to relocate the Emergency Department/ Urgent Care Clinic (ED/UCC) with accompanying support functions including police, enrollment, mental health and decontamination. The existing ED/UCC was housed in Building 14 (B.14) primarily. The new ED/UCC will occupy Building 1 (B.01) and most of the work is taking place on the ground floor G zone of (B.1). A possible future vertical expansion is also being addressed in this project. Additionally, we’re designing associated mechanical (HVAC) and plumbing systems for this addition which involves phasing on a busy VA hospital campus.
